Which drug test is best for me?

WHICH DRUG TEST IS BEST FOR ME

There is such a wide variety of drug testing supplies to choose from, that selecting which one is best for you can be an overwhelming process.

There is such a wide variety of drug testing supplies to choose from, that selecting which one is best for you can be an overwhelming process. The following tips and guide will help you better understand your options when deciding the best drug test kit for your specific situation. There are different products for different purposes or scenarios. Whether the purpose of the drug test is for pre-employment drug screening & testing, forensic testing, clinical testing, or testing at home for personal or family use.  We always suggest asking a few broad questions that will get you answers and point you in the right direction.

Do I need CLIA-waived products?

If you need a CLIA-waived drug test, then your options will be either the dip cards or the integrated cups. If you are going to be performing multiple drug testing on a regular basis we recommend using the “integrated cups” because they are more convenient than the dip cards. However, if pricing and keeping your costs to a minimum is your biggest concern, then we would recommend going with the dip cards. For further information and details about these products, please find details below in the reference guide.

Is a saliva drug test or urine drug test the best option for me?

Saliva drug screens are one of best options if you want to see the person as they are taking the drug test. They are also more convenient and less messy than dealing with urine samples. If having a visual of the applicant while taking the test is not necessary and having the option to detect drugs that have been in the body for a longer period of time  is more beneficial, then using either a dip card or integrated cup would be ideal. For further information on these drug testing supplies, please find additional details about them in the reference guide below.

Saliva drug tests are a great option if you want the added convenience of not having to deal with urine, would like a closer detection period, and would like to watch the patient take the drug test. Saliva tests are an exceedingly difficult test to fake, making it a great alternative if there has been suspected tampering with urine tests in the past. The detection window period is also smaller, so you can detect more recent usage of an illicit substance.

After reading this guide, you should have a good idea on which type of drug test will best serve your needs. Still, you may have some questions or uncertainties. Please see below for additional guidance.

Do I need special training?

No – our tests are easy to use and it is highly unlikely for any errors to occur if the tests are performed according to the directions. Still, we definitely advise you to ask us anything you are uncertain about and to read the directions carefully. Our urine drug test cups and dip cards are both CLIA-waived and FDA 510K approved, meaning they are approved as safe to use for aiding in clinical diagnoses. Saliva tests, however, are not able to be CLIA-waived or FDA 510K approved, but still are easy to use. They are for forensic usage only.

How many drugs do I need to test for?

The answer to this question really is different for every situation. We offer single drug tests all the way up to a 14-panel test. It is in your best interest to test only for drugs that are specific to the reasons you are using drug testing kits, since this will allow you to be as economical as possible. Costs go up considerably as you add further drugs to the panel. For detailed information on drugs you can test for, see our resource on Drugs of Abuse.

How do I prevent the tampering of samples?

The best two options to eliminate tampering with results are a saliva drug screen or adulterant testing. By using a saliva drug test, you can be right in front of a person and watch them take it without it being invasive. This makes saliva tests almost impossible to fake. Adulterant testing helps on urine drug test cups by giving a reading on the integrity of the sample, meaning that if something was added to tamper with the results (such as Clorox), it will likely be detected.

Does a positive result mean the drug was used?

No onsite drug testing supply is strictly qualitative and any presumptive positives must be confirmed at a registered laboratory such as Labcorp or Fastest Labs. Onsite drug testing supplies are tools that help separate the positive results from the negative ones. If you want to learn more about the difference between instant or onsite drug testing and laboratory testing, see our Drug screen vs drug test? resource.
