What is a mouth swab drug test?

A mouth swab drug test, also known as saliva or oral fluid drug test, is one of the most common ways of drug testing, and is used to detect substance abuse through measuring the level of various substances in a person’s system.

As the name suggests, this procedure involves taking saliva from the mouth, collecting it via a swab, and analyzing it for common drugs of abuse. If the levels of a drug or alcohol are beyond a determined range, the test will show as positive for that substance.

What drugs can be detected in a saliva drug test?

Saliva drug tests can detect the most common drugs of abuse, such as alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines and methamphetamines.

  • Amphetamines
  • Barbiturates
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Buprenorphine
  • Cocaine
  • Ecstasy
  • Marijuana
  • Methamphetamines
  • Methadone
  • Opiates/Morphine
  • Oxycodone
  • Phencyclidine

However, a single oral fluid drug test won’t screen for every drug out there. Tests come in panels, that is, the number of drugs they detect. The most common are 5 and 10 panel drug tests, which check for that same number of drugs, but you can also find screens from single drug tests to 12 panel drug tests.

Besides panels, tests also have configurations. These are the specific substances that they detect, and they are determined by the maker. When you purchase a mouth swab drug screen, make sure to check the configuration beforehand, to confirm all the drugs you want to detect are there, or they won’t show up even if the donor took the drugs.

How long can drugs be detected in a mouth swab drug test?

Mouth swab drug tests are able to detect more recent drug usage activity than a urine test. A mouth swab drug test can detect if someone has used a drug typically within about 5-10 min, while, in comparison, a urine test would not be able to detect the drug until after about 2-5 hrs.

Similarly, drugs stop showing up earlier in an oral fluid drug screen than in a urine drug screen. Drugs can be detected in saliva up to 72 hours after drug use, while in urine they can appear up to a week after consumption.

Why use a mouth swab drug test?

Mouth swab drug tests are less invasive and provide additional security since they are not able to be tampered with, unlike urine drug tests. You will be able to attain results in only a matter of minutes and are able to watch as the donor performs the drug test.

In case someone has a “shy bladder,” a mouth swab drug test is a great way to still be able to perform a test.

For the above reasons, mouth swab drug tests are ideal for a broad range of testing situations, including pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, rehabs, healthcare, universities, judicial system, prisons, and post-accident.
