What is a Rapid Flu Test Kit
A rapid flu test kit is a medical device used to detect the presence of influenza virus in an individual. It is designed to provide quick results, usually within 15 minutes or less. The kits are typically easy to use and require minimal training for operation.
What Does a Rapid Flu Test Kit Include?
The contents of a rapid flu test kit include:
Swabs, sample collection tubes, reagents (chemicals that react with the virus), control solutions (used as reference points when interpreting results) and instructions for use. There are 25 test kits inlcuded.
How Does it Work?
The process begins by collecting a sample from the patient using either nasal or throat swabs which are then placed into one of the provided collection tubes containing viral transport media (VTM).
- This VTM helps preserve any viruses present in the sample while allowing them to remain active so they can be detected during testing.
- Once collected, samples are mixed with reagents specific to influenza A & B before being incubated at room temperature for up to 15 minutes.
- After this time has elapsed, results can be read visually or through automated methods depending on what type of kit is being used.
- Positive tests will show distinct color changes indicating that influenza virus was present in the sample while negative tests will not have any visible changes indicating absence of infection .
What Are Its Benefits?
Rapid flu test kits offer several advantages over traditional laboratory-based testing methods including faster turnaround times, reduced costs associated with shipping samples offsite and improved accuracy due to fewer potential sources of contamination or error during processing steps like extraction and amplification .Additionally , these types of tests allow healthcare providers to quickly diagnose patients who may have contracted Influenza A & B without having wait days for lab results – something that could potentially save lives in cases where timely treatment is essential .
Benefits of a Rapid Rapid Flu Test Kit
- Rapid Flu Test results are in minutes: Allows for point of care rapid treatment to reduce the risks related to over treatment and to provide better patient care.
- Reliable result that you can trust.
- Three color results: Easy to read results eliminate mistakes in interpretation.
- Excellent format for Point of Care Testing (POC)
- Reduces the number of “unnecessary” prescribed antibiotics for common cold.

Benefits of a CLIA Waived Rapid Flu Test
When the Binax Rapid Flu Test is performed with a nasal swab, it will differentiate between influenza A and influenza B using one simple. Every year millions of Americans see the doctor with flu like symptoms but only a small percentage will be positive. Rapid diagnostic flu tests would be useful in clinical practice, especially when treating children and other patients at risk for flu-related complications. Influenza is a highly contagious, acute, viral infection of the respiratory tract. It is a communicable disease that is easily transmitted through coughing and sneezing. Flu season outbreaks occur each year during the fall and winter months.
Difference Between Influenza and Common Cold
Respiratory tract infections are a common reason for prescribing antibiotics although many of these infections do not require such therapy. During the flu season, using a rapid flu test to quickly diagnose influenza can help to reduce antibiotic use, allow for infection control and reduce overall costs related to additional diagnostic investigations. Quickly identifying patients who are infectious with influenza will allow for appropriate treatment with antiviral medications such as Tamiflu or Relenza. These drugs are most effective when administered within 48 hours at the onset of symptoms. Rapid diagnosis of influenza with a rapid flu test at the point of care is critical to ensuring that patients are able to receive these antiviral medications as quickly as possible.
