ETG Alcohol Test

An EtG alcohol test is used to determine whether or not a person has recently consumed alcohol by detecting for the presence of ethyl glucuronide (EtG) in an individual’s urine. This type of test is mainly administered to individuals who are not supposed to be consuming alcohol for one reason or another, i.e., those in alcohol treatment programs, on criminal probation, or in DWI/DUI programs.

Whereas breath and saliva alcohol tests can only detect alcohol while it is in the body, EtG alcohol tests are able to determine whether or not alcohol has been consumed up to 3-days before the test is administered. Alcohol urine test strips are able to do this by testing for the presence of the alcohol metabolite ethyl glucuronide, rather than testing for the presence of ethyl alcohol which is only present for up to a few hours after alcohol consumption.

In the past, EtG alcohol testing was very expensive as it could only be executed in a laboratory with highly specialized equipment. More recent technology has allowed for the development of instant alcohol urine test strips that are affordable, convenient, and easy to use. Today, Halux Diagnostic provides a valuable resource for establishments that require EtG alcohol testing on individuals at a low cost with bulk discounts. Please contact us for more information.

ETG is the by-product of the bodies metabolization of alcohol.  Until recently testing for ETG was only available through laboratory testing. ETG will remain in the body up to 3 days after consumption which is well beyond the detection period of an alcohol saliva test.  This is highly useful in the scenario where an individual has been ordered to abstain from alcohol consumption, because it can be detected if someone were to drink over the weekend. ETG test or for forensic usage only.

Sensitivity of our ETG Test

Halux Diagnostics’s ETG tests have a cutoff level of 500ng/ml.

Benefits of ETG Urine Alcohol Tests Over Breath or Saliva Alcohol Tests

The biggest benefit of ethyl glucuronide (EtG) urine alcohol tests over breath or saliva alcohol tests is the fact that alcohol can be detected for up to 3-days after consumption. Ethyl glucuronide is present in urine for up to 48-hours in most individuals. In heavier drinkers, ethyl glucuronide is typically present for up to 72-hours or more.

This fact has residual benefits that cannot be understated. First, there are certain situations in which it is crucial that an individual is not consuming alcohol at all, not just before or during certain activities, i.e., driving. Alcohol urine test strips are necessary to ensure that an individual who will be participating in a liver transplant has not been drinking alcohol recently and to ensure sobriety of an individual who is in an alcohol treatment program. These instances require prolonged sobriety, which cannot be determined or confirmed with traditional breath or saliva alcohol tests.

Futhermore, EtG test strips are easy to acquire and relatively affordable, in comparison to breathalyzers and lab equipment. Your organization can purchase EtG test strips from Halux Diagnostic and receive a bulk order discount for your patronage and convenience.

Alcohol is the most commonly abused drug in the United States. It is legal and easy to acquire. It is important that your organization is able to determine which individuals are following proper protocol and which are not, because the consequences of alcohol consumption in certain individuals could mean life or death. Using EtG alcohol test strips is one of the most reliable ways to get the facts your organization needs.

How Does an ETG Test Work?

When a person consumes ethyl alcohol, their body metabolizes it and produces ethyl glucuronide (EtG). While ethyl alcohol can leave the body in a matter of hours, EtG remains present for up to 3-days after ethyl alcohol consumption. Testing for the presence of EtG is important because it will determine if a person has recently consumed alcohol – not simply if there are intoxicated at the time of the test.

EtG urine test strips work much like any other urine test strip. An individual provides a sample of their urine in a cup and a test administrator will dip the EtG test strip into the urine. After a few minutes of processing, the test strip will read either “positive,” “negative,” or “invalid.” If an “invalid” is received, the test should be administered again.

It’s important to note that an EtG test does require private facilities as a urine sample will have to be given at the time of the testing. This could mean that an individual is able to provide a sample of urine that is not their own, unless there is a proctor of the same gender supervising the sample collection. Please contact us for more information on EtG alcohol test strips if you still have any questions.

What Can Effect an ETG Urine Alcohol Test Results?

Ethyl glucuronide (EtG) tests pose some concern because they are very sensitive, which can be good and bad. On one hand, they are excellent at detecting the presence of ethyl glucuronide, but on the other hand, there is ethyl glucuronide present in many products besides beer, wine, and spirits.

For example:

  • Mouthwash
  • Breath spray
  • Aftershave
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Cleaning products
  • Cosmetics

There are many other products that contain EtG and individuals should be made well aware of a complete list of these products before they are required to take an EtG test. This will ensure they do not receive a false positive.

The amount of alcohol that an individual consumes can also affect the results of an EtG test. Those who are heavy drinkers or have been diagnosed with Alcohol Use Disorder will typically have EtG present in their urine for up to 5-days after consuming alcohol. People who are more casual drinkers may only have EtG present in their urine for up to 3-days after consuming alcohol. In either cases, an EtG urine test strip will certainly be able to tell whether or not a person is abstaining from alcohol.
